Description

2 individual petitions (James Peggs 'late missionary in India') and 1 collective petition (19 inhabitants of Bourne, Lincolnshire) on behalf of Bennett Davey convicted at the Lincolnshire Quarter Sessions at Bourne in January 1835 for poaching. There is an accompanying letter from General Johnson, Chairman of the Quarter Sessions. Gaoler's report: character indifferent, twice before convicted. Grounds for clemency: young, married, previous good character, led astray by others, distress of aged parents, offence committed on estate of General Johnson, Chairman of Sessions who was absent for trial and has expressed regret at severe sentence. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Annotated: nil. AV 37
