1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Richard Carlile convicted at the Old Bailey in November 1834 for exhibiting effigies. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner has been in prison for 10 years because of a loophole in the interpretation of bail terms, to gain bail the prisoner has to agree to his business being carried on in the name of another party but feels this is not fair since others may not share his views 'in these times of strong feelings' so is continuing to run business from prison, claimed offered to remove effigies after trial. Initial sentence: fine of 40 shillings and sureties for 3 years. Annotated: nil [pencil notes]. AV 14
