1 individual petition (Lady Cowper) and 4 testimonies on behalf of Caroline Bernard alias Madame Ude, a French lady convicted at Surrey Quarter Sessions 9 February 1835 for stealing lace from shopkeepers Thomas Kirkpatrick and Robert Cornell in Kennington or Kensington on 17 January. Evidences supplied by Timothy Lynes, police constable, Thomas Jones and W Chambers, including testimonies from Brixton House of Correction with the official summary of case details. There are 2 items in French from the prisoner and a summary of case details from the Chairman of Quarter Sessions. Grounds for clemency: did not understand English legal system, previous employers all found her honest, few character witnesses at trial because too ashamed to tell people, father was a French general, already served 2 months of sentence. Initial sentence: 6 months imprisonment. Annotated: pardon she may be discharged immediately. AV 12
