1 individual petition (James Smith, the prisoner's father and carpet weaver) and 1 collective petition (4 signatories including the Lord Provost of Edinburgh) on behalf of John Smith, shoemaker of 51 Pitt Street, Sydney, New South Wales convicted at the High Court of Justiciary on 14 July 1807 of breaking into and pillaging a house. Grounds for clemency: transported as a boy after real instigator of the crime turned King's evidence against him. Supported himself by working his trade as a shoemaker. Granted a free pardon which Governor McQuarrie changed to a conditional pardon. Sailed on the Admiral Gambier in May 1808. Good conduct whilst in New South Wales. Also two letters from Alexander Henderson, Lord Provost of Edinburgh concerning the case. Initial sentence: transported for life. Annotated: Absolute pardon 1824. MK46
