Description
Content
Folios 46-48. Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Enclosed is an extract from the minutes of the guardians' meeting of 11 March regarding the resignation of William Dods, Relieving Officer of the Norhamshire district. The extract covers the resignation letter dated 10 March 1845 from Dods, covering both his offices as relieving officer and as registrar of births, deaths and marriages, due to deafness and failing memory. The guardians resolved that Dodds [Dods] continue in the post until the end of the midsummer quarter; that his successor be elected at the board meeting of Tuesday 8 April and that the post be advertised in the two Berwick newspapers, the North British Advertiser and a Newcastle newspaper; that the new appointee be between 25 and 45, reside in the district and devote all his time to the office unless the Commission direct otherwise; that applications and testimonials be received by the clerks on or before 31 March and considered by the workhouse committee on 1 April, with any candidate found ineligible to be given notice not to appear on the day of election; that approved candidates must attend the guardians' meeting on the day of election and undergo the board's examination; that the salary be £70 per annum as at present; and that the workhouse committee prepare the advertisement embodying such of these terms as they deem necessary. Annotated: 17 March, to enquire whether the new relieving officer is to enter upon his duties and be paid before midsummer next as it is not possible to pay two relieving officers at the same time for the same district; also to send usual queries. Paper number: 3097/A/1845. Poor Law Union Number 325. Counties: Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed and Northumberland.
