Folios 42-44. Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] regarding medical arrangements. Enclosed is an extract from the minutes of the guardians' meeting of 11 March relative to the appointment terms for the medical officers. The guardians resolve that appointments are from 25 March 1845 until 25 March 1846. As the circumstances with regard to conforming with the Medical Order are the same as last year, the union should be divided into four medical districts: Berwick district, comprising the parish of Berwick and attendance at the workhouse, at a salary of £50 per annum; Norhamshire district, comprising the whole of Norhamshire, at a salary of £30 per annum; Islandshire district, comprising the whole of Islandshire excepting Holy Island, at a salary of £35 per annum; Holy Island district, comprising Holy Island, at a salary of £5 per annum. All salaries will be exclusive of fees prescribed by the Medical Order. The medical officers are to attend the fortnightly meetings of the board of guardians and the Berwick District Medical Officer is to attend the workhouse committee meetings. Vaccination districts are to be the same as the medical districts and the medical officers be appointed vaccinators for their districts at a fee of 1s 6d for every successful vaccination, the contracts being entered into as soon as their appointments have been made by the guardians and confirmed by the Poor Law Commission.The board is to elect the medical officers at their meeting on 25 March.
