- Folios 107-108. Letter from Joseph Lowndes, Clerk to the Guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, reporting decisions of first meeting of board of guardians on 3 April 1838; Thomas Stevens, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner in the chair. Following appointments made: Dr Bent of Basford House, Chairman for one year. George Baker of Burslem, Vice-Chairman for one year. Joseph Lowndes of Wolstanton, Clerk to the Board of Guardians at salary of £100 per annum. Messrs S and J Alcock of Burslem Treasurers, surety bond £1000. Joseph Boulton, Relieving Officer, at £120 per annum, surety bond £50. George Powell of Moorland Road Burslem, Auditor at £20 per annum. Charles Davenport, George Tait, Daniel Ball, Samuel Goddard, Medical Officers, each at £30 per annum with ten shillings and six pence for each midwifery case they attend. Present masters and matrons of two workhouses to remain in post for six months on existing salaries. Annotated: 18 April 1838, with a draft reply to Lowndes to confirm all the decisions and to enquire as to names and salaries of masters and matrons. Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
