Description
Content
Folios 105-106. Letter from Thomas Stevens, [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], at Lichfield, to George Nicholls, [Poor Law Commissioner], reporting a very successful first meetings of both Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union and Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union so he feels no apprehensions there. At Newcastle Town Hall 'a great many of the operatives were present and behaved with perfect respect and decorum the whole time'. 'I have taken possession of this Union now Mr Earle attending the meeting here with me yesterday and took his leave of the Guardians' [Lichfield]. A struggle had taken place over the workhouse and much persuasion will be needed to get a new one. No property sales to be allowed at present. Victory over the anti-workhouse party at Belper had been achieved by these means. Stevens wants to see all the correspondence over the East Preston Incorporation to see if his case at Allstonefield is affected by this example. May have to set up Bakewell Poor Law Union without Allstonefield. Paper number: 3971/C/1838. Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
