Folios 109-110. Letter from Joseph Lowndes, Clerk to the Guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, reporting that at the first meeting of board of guardians on 3 April 1838, Thomas Stevens, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner in the chair, the union was divided into three registration districts with Wolstanton comprising Chatterley, Chesterton, Knutton, Wolstanton: Tunstall comprising Brieryhurst, Chell, Oldcott, Ranscliff, Stadmorslow, Thursfield, Wedgwood, Tunstall: Burslem the entire parish. Joseph Lowndes to be Superintendent Registrar. John Ball to be Registrar for Wolstanton; Samuel Adams, Registrar for Tunstall and George Powell, of Moorland Road Burslem, Registrar for Burslem. Annotated: 24 April 1838 with draft reply to Joseph Lowndes referring all matters of registration to the Registrar General. Notes that the clerk to the union is ex officio Superintendent Registrar if 'he thinks fit', and if the Poor Law Commission were to be required to approve Lowndes in this role it would do so. Notes that there is no legal objection to George Powell, Auditor, being a Registrar. Thomas Stevens approved this reply. Paper number: 4120/C/1838. Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
