Description
Content
Folios 13-15. Letter from Joseph Boulton, Assistant Overseer of the Poor, Burslem, to the Poor Law Commission seeking instructions in bastardy cases. A girl in workhouse known to be a 'harlot' with two illegitimate children by a strolling player, two other girls little better and a fourth applying for admittance, all destitute although previously able to earn a living. Without parish aid they would have died and now too engrossed in their children to find work. The overseers wish to know if they are obliged to keep these women in the workhouse. Several girls in parish with one child each of 'better morals' but applying for cash payments to stay out of workhouse. Overseers wish to know if they must make payments and if so whether they can recover the allowances from the putative fathers. [Folios 13-14 are year guards etc.] Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
