Report of John Silvester, Recorder of London on 1 individual petition (G Parry, a former employer of the prisoner) on behalf of William Griffin, groom convicted at the Old Bailey [no date given] for stealing an umbrella, property of from Sarah Canning, and striking her with it. Grounds for clemency: the prosecutrix was a 'streetwalker', the prisoner had no one to speak for him or give him character at his trial, he was drunk at the time of the offence, this is his first crime, his past employers found him 'trusty and honest' and had employed him in collecting and discharging bills. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: six months imprisonment in the house of correction. Annotated: 'pardoned'. Folios 308-315.
