Report of A Thomson on 1 collective petition (59 people including the vicar of Foleshill, Coventry) on behalf of Thomas Carpenter tried (with William Ratnett, boatman for stealing) at the Coventry Assizes in August 1811, and convicted of receiving a parcel of silk knowing it to be stolen, property of Mr Lilley, on board a canal boat the property of Thomas Bache in April 1811. There are covering letters from C Lilly and a letter from Thomas Carpenter from aboard ship Fortune advising Peter Moore MP that the ship is about to sail for Botany Bay. Grounds for clemency: he has a wife and 7 children who are disconsolate and parents over 70 years old. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks against mercy. Folios 316-322.
