Description

Report of John Silvester, Recorder of London on 1 individual petition( the prisoner) and 2 collective petitions (5 people, including William Wayland, the prisoner's father and 9 people, tradesmen of London) on behalf of Joseph Wayland convicted at the Old Bailey 'at the last September sessions' of stealing coins worth 4/10d, property of John Vickery Broughton, woollen draper, on 18 July 1812. Evidences supplied by William Evered, servant to Broughton. There is a covering letter to the petition from John Simeon and a letter from William Wayland. Grounds for clemency: youth (12 or 14 years [both ages given]), the youngest of a large family all brought up with credit, he should have had a defence lawyer at his trial but through a mistake he did not, his health is suffering from his imprisonment in Newgate, has aged and respected parents who if he is released will take him back home where his principles may be changed by proper restraint and care, and he will be removed from his friends and sent to school. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks strongly against mercy. Annotated' This case to be referred ---- the convict shall not be sent away in the meantime. 2nd petition: to be pardoned and sent to school. Folios 298-307.
