Letter from Lord Ellenborough on 1 individual petition (the prisoner) on behalf of John Drakard, bookseller and printer convicted by 'special jury' at the Lincoln March Assizes held on 9 March 1811 for libel regarding 'strictures in the military punishment of flogging' inserted in the prisoner's newspaper The Stamford News. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner was not the author of the piece, swears attachment to the 'constitution of his country' due to his imprisonment his business had suffered and he cannot pay the fine. Initial sentence: 18 months in Lincoln Castle gaol, fined £200 and to give security for his good behaviour himself for £400 and two sureties of £200 each, passed by the Court of Kings Bench on 23 May 1811. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 294-297.
