Report of Alan Chambre on 1 collective petition (37 people) on behalf of William Radford, carter, convicted at the Somerset Lent Assizes held at Taunton, of stealing a gold watch, case and seal, value 10 guineas, from within the premises of Matthias Harris, clock and watchmaker of Bath, the property of Rev W Marshall on 2 August 1811. Evidences supplied by Matthias Harris, Jacob Salmon, carrier at Bath; James Carey, a police officer; There are 2 letters from James Romilly. Grounds for clemency: youth (17 years), his first offence, Salmon and John Clark have given him good character references, the prisoner took the watch because his watch was being mended by Harris and he needed one and he gave up the stolen property promptly when asked. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: sentence to be reduced to 12 or 15 months hard labour in House of Correction. Folios 278-285.
