Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of the charterhouse of Mount Grace.
Addressees
Duke of Gloucester, Protector of England, and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged] The Prior and convent of the charterhouse of Mount Grace state that Richard II granted them the Priory of Ware, Henry IV removed them from it, granting them instead an annuity of £100 at the Exchequer, and Henry V granted them the alien priories of Hough and Minting in Lincolnshire. However, one John Burdet, canon of Cherbourg has recently been presented to Hough by the Abbot of Cherbourg, admitted by the vicar general of Lincoln, and received and inducted, to the great disinheritance of the king, both in this case and in the case of similar things happening in other alien priories, if a remedy is not provided. They ask that John Burdet might be summoned before the Duke and council and examined on this matter, to show what authority he has, and that they might be restored to their possession.

Note
The hand and language would suggest that the Duke of Gloucester addressed here is Humphrey of Lancaster, as the petition refers to a presentation by the abbot of Cherbourg, and this could not be during the time of Richard of Gloucester in 1483. John Burdet, chaplain, is mentioned in CCR 1422-9 p.483 (22 October 1422). Joan of Navarre died in 1437.E Margaret Thompson discusses this petition on p.234 of The Carthusian Order in England (London, 1930).
