Description
Petitioners
Margaret Brokehous, widow, tenant of the Priory of Sheen.
Name(s)
Brokehous, Margaret
Addressees
Duke of Gloucester, Protector of England, and council.
Nature of request
Margaret Brokehous, widow, tenant of the Priory of Sheen states that William Wolrigge, bailiff of the hundred of Radlow, Simon Kynge of Leadon, Richard Floide, clerk of the vill of ...erd, and Thomas Yerkhill of Worcestershire have harassed her and wrongly sued against her in the hundred of Radlow with biased inquests in foreign hundreds, so that she has suffered losses and damages to the sum of 100s. They have also threatened her with life and limb, so that she does not dare to approach her house in the hundred of Broxash, as is well known to John Merburye and several others. She asks that the malefactors might be summoned before the Duke and council by letters of the privy seal, to be examined on their actions, and to find security to keep the peace towards her and all the king's lieges, so that she might enjoy her house, goods and chattels in peace.
Nature of endorsement
On 7 June in the second year it was granted at Westminster by the council that a writ would be sent to the Sheriff of Herefordshire to take surety of the peace etc, as is the custom, from the people mentioned here, under pain of a severe penalty etc., towards the aforesaid Margaret and the king's people, in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, of the Bishops of Norwich and Worcester, of Cromwell, of Tiptoft, of the Treasurer and of the Keeper of the Privy Seal.Be . . . in the . . . for to take surety of peace etc.
