Description
Petitioners
Raymond (Ramon) Leon, citizen of Bordeaux.
Name(s)
Leon, Raymond (Ramon)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Raymond Leon states that he has always served the king with his support and counsel, and was one of the messengers who brought him the news that Bordeaux had surrendered to him, and that he has suffered greatly for that allegiance. He requests the office that William Aymerik held, that of hearing the pleas in Bordeaux castle; or if the king does not wish to give him this grace, a letter to the Seneschal and Constable to give him some bailiwick, prevote or castellany where he can serve the king.
Nature of endorsement
The Seneschal is to be ordered to provide him with an office that is suitable for him.
Places mentioned
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
William (Guilhem) Aymerik (Aimeric), auditor of pleas in Bordeaux castle.
Note
A note at the beginning of this file, signed R. L. Atkinson and dated 9 March 1932, states, 'Nos 14511-50 and 14551-80 in the next file appear to form an original file, or at any rate a conjunction of some duration. Such as can be dated appear to belong to the year 1305, or thereabouts, so the remainder may provisionally be regarded as belonging to this date'. This petition has therefore given a provisional date of 1305. Roles Gascons, vol. III no.4669 is dated 26 November 1304, and no.4934 is dated 4 April 1305, but there is no record of a grant of an office to the petitioner. Malcolm Vale discusses this petition on pp.222-223 of The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War, 1250-1340 (Oxford 1990).
