SC 8/251/12511
Date
[1398]
Description
Petitioners
Michael de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk.
Name(s)
Pole, Earl of Suffolk, Michael
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Earl of Suffolk requests that the reversion of the manor of Costessy be restored to him and his heirs. He states that the reversion of this manor, after the death of Isabella, Countess of Suffolk, was granted to his father with other lands in exchange for an annuity from the customs of Hull, but it was taken into the king's hands following his father's forfeiture. This forfeiture has now been annulled, but the reversion to this manor was granted to the Duke of York, and has not yet been restored to him.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Costessy, [Norfolk]
Kingston upon Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Michael de la Pole, late Earl of Suffolk, father of the petitioner
Isabella [de Ufford], Countess of Suffolk
[Edmund of Langley], Duke of York.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1398, with reference to various grants of this reversion to the Duke of York in that year, and the restoration of the Earl of Suffolk in January 1398. This petition was evidently written by the same scribe as those at SC 8/251/12512 and SC 8/251/12521, and the identical stitch marks show that the three were formerly joined together.SC 8/251/12521 contains a reference to a half-year delay between the earl's restoration and that petition, suggesting that it, and thus also this petition, was presented in the summer of 1398. The king's uncle, Edmund, Duke of York, is here mistakenly named as Edward.
