Reference
SC 8/237/11851
Date
[1327-? c. 1350]
Description
Petitioners
Peter (Peir) de Porruto (Porut), proctor of the inhabitants of St-Sever.
Name(s)
de Porruto (Porut), Peter (Peir)
Addressees
King.
Occupation
proctor of the inhabitants of St-Sever
Nature of request
Peter de Porruto makes four requests:1) He states that the inhabitants of the town of St-Sever lent the King's grandfather a large sum of money, and that four proctors were appointed to receive payment of this sum, of whom three are dead and the fourth, Raymond Arnaut de Montauser, has paid back only a part of what is owed. The town is also so badly supplied that it will be an easy target for the French. He asks the King either to pay them a certain sum to cover their debt, or to compel Raymond Arnaut to pay them.2) He appears to state that Raymond Arnaut is not paying debts owed by the town to the King, but putting the money to his own use, and asks that he might be ordered to satisfy their creditors.3) He complains that Raymond Arnaut has acquired letters to the Mayor and Sheriffs [of Ipswich] and the Mayor and Bailiffs of Southampton to have him arrested and put on mainprise. He requests a remedy, as he has done nothing for which he should be arrested.4) He asks that Raymond Arnaut might be compelled to pay another debt.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] It is found by a process held in the Exchequer between the proctor of the said town and Raymond [Arnaut that] Raymond Arnaut is in receipt of the said sum. Raymond is to be ordered again that from what he has received [he is to pay the aforesaid proctor], pound for pound and shilling for shilling, as to other communities contained in that assignment.[To second] If anyone wishes to complain about the said . . . he is to have a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, that, when they have heard the complainant's plaint, they are further to do [what is just].[To third] It is not believed that any writ has been issued by the King's Chancery to arrest anyone contrary to the common law.[To fourth] Because it is contained in the aforesaid process that the said Raymond has satisfied the proctor who now complains for the aforesaid sum, it is believed that he has received sufficient security, through which it seems etc.[None on dorse]
