Description
Petitioners
John Swaffham, Bishop of Bangor.
Name(s)
Swaffham, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Bangor
Nature of request
The Bishop of Bangor states that he holds certain lands of the King in Rhos and Rhufoniog, parcels of his temporalities for which he has done fealty instead of homage, and of which the King's progenitors since the conquest of Wales have had the keeping during voidance. This year, in an eyre of the Crown held at Denbigh by the justices of the Countess of March, the Countess summoned him there to do fealty and homage and to claim his franchises and liberties, and because he did not appear his franchises in the said lands, with the profits, were seized into the hand of the Countess, contrary to the tenor of the charters granted to him by the King's progenitors and confirmed by the King. And because his tenants sold beasts and other goods outside the fairs and markets of the Countess, they have been driven out, imprisoned and fined. The petitioner requests that the Countess be ordered to allow him to enjoy his liberties and franchises or to show the council the reasons for such claims and amercements; and if they are found to be reasonable, he will do whatever the council ordains.
Nature of endorsement
The Countess should be ordered on pain of forfeiture to stop harassing the bishop, who is a tenant of the King, or to come before the King and his council and be adjudged on this matter, bringing with her the relevant evidences and records; and in the meantime she should release the distresses and fines taken and redress what has been wrongly done. And the bishop should have an order to come before the council on the same day, having been informed of his rights.
