Description
Petitioners
Ralph de Wolverton; John Morteyn; Alice Morteyn, wife of John Morteyn and executrix of the will of Thomas Haket.
Name(s)
de Wolverton; Morteyn; Morteyn, Ralph; John; Alice
Addressees
[Thomas Arundel], bishop of Ely, chancellor of England.
Nature of request
Wolverton and John and Alice Morteyn state that when Wolverton and Haket were collectors of the two fifteenths granted to the King in the first year of his reign (1377) in the Isle of Wight, they could not levy the money because so many vills on the isle had been burned and destroyed by enemies who had attacked that same year. And in the third year of his reign (1379-80) when a fifteenth and a half was granted, the collectors demanded allowance in their payment for the destroyed vills, which they were granted. The petitioners request that they may have similar allowance in their accounts for the said destroyed vills, since they have been called to the Exchequer to account for the said two fifteenths for the whole isle, notwithstanding those vills which were burned and destroyed.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
