Description
Petitioners
Richard de Bury, Bishop of Durham.
Name(s)
de Bury, Richard
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Bishop of Durham
Nature of request
The bishop shows that by reason of his royal liberty he had the right to forfeitures of war. Bishop Bek seized the manor of Hart forfeited by Bruce but Edward I by his royal power ejected the bishop and granted the manor to Clifford. It was granted in parliament that Bishop Beaumont should have forfeitures of war, but those holding lands by royal grant should not be ousted without the right to answer. Clifford's son is of age and the bishop requests that the king ordain a remedy and revoke the collation to Clifford as he had done with an earlier collation to Thomas de Clare.
Nature of endorsement
Because he supposes by his petition that Clifford is tenant of the manor he should sue before the king by a writ at the common law.
