Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the Hanse of Almain.
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Nature of request
The merchants of the Hanse of Almain state that although the king had ratified and confirmed their charter, he later took it away without good reason. They have long sued to have it back, and the High Master of Prussia and the cities of the Hanse have sent letters on their behalf, but they have all been told that they can have no answer until this parliament. They ask that they might have their charter back, or at least a reply.
Nature of endorsement
It is agreed and assented in parliament that the said charter of confirmation should be delivered to them out of the hanaper, on condition that before Michaelmas next they bring letters sealed with the common seals of their cities, and of their sovereigns and masters, as they should do and are accustomed to do, attesting that the English merchants will be allowed to come, go, trade and stay in all their markets, as safely and freely as they used to; and also that in all other places, whether in Prussia, Denmark, Norway, or elsewhere, where they come, they aid any English merchants there in all good and franchise in their power, and do not act against them, privately or openly; and that they have these letters delivered to the king's council before the said term, on pain of forfeiture of all their franchise in England. And if, within this term, they do not do it, without just cause, they have promised and will be bound by this ordinance to restore their charter and their franchise will be repealed.
