Report of James Adair, Recorder of London, on James Bernard, convicted at the Old Bailey[?] in December 1786, for stealing bank notes, property of Mr Popplewell and Mr Hyam. Grounds for clemency: youth (16 years), the jury and prosecutor recommended mercy, father has offered to send him abroad, previous good character and though was seduced by bad company had already served 12 months in prison. Initials sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to transport himself for 7 years.
