Description

Folio 81: Charles Compton to Duke of Newcastle. Although the Hanover packet-boat has now been detained for over a year, he has not yet received any instructions concerning the Portuguese demand for satisfaction for the accidental murder of a Portuguese woman by one of her crew. Engagement between H.M.S. Fly and a rich Spanish vessel from Havana, which has taken refuge in Viana. A Sicilian priest has offered to reveal a scheme for the surprise capture of Gibraltar, if adequately rewarded. King of Portugal's proposed return to Caldas is cancelled. Princess of Brazil had a miscarriage. Portuguese army has been reduced to peace-time establishment of 12,000 foot and 3,000 horse.
