Description

Folio 19: Carteret to Wich. Secret intelligences for your use: chief aim of French at Moscow is to get admitted into the negotiation for peace between Russia and Sweden, and Grand Marshal Bestuzev. Promised his assistance to D'Alion, but not so far as to procure the mediation. Brummer and Lestock still serve the French and Lestock takes a pension from them. They carry all from D'Alion to the Czarina particularly to set her against King of Prussia with whom she will never contract an alliance. Lestock undertakes to try to dissuade the Czarina from the idea of getting the Administrators married in England or elected in Sweden and the French depend on him to defeat those projects. Only hope of French party in Moscow of retrieving credit there is to make a match between a Princess of France and Duke of Holstein. Good effect for France may be the establishment of Russian regiment in France, like the Swedish and German ones. A nursery of partizans and slaves to France amongst the Russian nobility France has hopes that Czarina on return to St Petersburg will show less deference to her Senate and Ministers. Guy Dickens has sent you an account of State of affairs in Sweden. Await impatiently news of Czarina's views on possible election of Duke Administrator of Holstein for successor to the Crown of Sweden. Dated Whitehall, 12 Nov 1742.
