Description

Folio 13: Wich to Carteret. Intelligence from Stockholm shows the secret committee as good to English interests as the Marshal of the Diet. Congratulations on the favourable prospect of our affairs in Sweden. Russian Ministers realize Swedes are exerting their interests and those of France, at the Porte to get the Tartars to make an inroad into Russian dominions by beginning hostilities, but they think Swedes and French will not Succeed, and flatter themselves that when Turks hear of wonderful progress of Russian aims in Finland, the Grand Vizir will rather persue peaceful means. Letter to Sir Everard Fawkener with account of actions in Finland, hoping to induce Grand Vizir to lay aside thoughts of breaking with Russia. If better people could have been found to replace the Bestuzev's, de la Chetardie would have succeeded in having them removed. Now they are secure in their respective positions partly because of their reconciliation with Lestock. Sorry to hear from Lord Hyndford of delay to signature of Defensive alliance between England and Prussia, pending answer to some representations he made at Berlin. Mardefeld told Russian ministers in the presence of Botta and myself, that the Anglo-Prussian Defensive alliance is entirely agreed upon, apparently to hasten this Court's decision regarding the renewal of the Defensive Alliance between Russia and Prussia. Affair depends on when Czarina will grant my private audience, and giving invitation cannot be witheld except by deliberately creating delays. Buchwald says that Czarina is considering his orders and instructions for Naryskin. Nothing to be depended on here until done. Dated Moscow, 14 Oct 1742.
