Description

Folio 210: Wich to Carteret. Called on Great Chancellor and after pressing great secrecy regarding source of information, told him your two pieces of intelligence, the first concerning money which Porte has granted to Sweden to enable war to be continued against Russia. This was known from Russian resident at Constantinople, who says Porte had been persuaded to lodge 500 purses in the hands of Castellane to be free of further subsidies. As to the second, Grant Vizir is zealously inclined to assist Sweden by attacking Russian frontiers and would not end war until Czarina restored all conquered provinces to Sweden. This had not even been intimated by Vesnajcov, who on the contrary, represented the Grand Vizir as peaceable man wanting good understandings with Russia. Czarina very grateful for communications and will no doubt make suitable reciprocations to HM Russia wishing to rescue Sweden from servitude to France will pursue same method as previously to suppress partizans of France in Sweden and knowing the cost declared a sum of 30,000 rubles in Amsterdam which could be appropriated and sent to Guy-Dickens, there being no Russian envoy in Sweden. Czarina well disposed to accede to Treaty and all steps taken are agreed by Hungarian and Prussian ministers. Dated Moscow, 27 Sept 1742.
