Description

Folio 10: Wich to Carteret. Accounts to you from Vienna show Russian court to be disposed to assist Queen of Hungary. If you understand by this court the brothers Bestuzev, that is right, but Czarina is far from being in favour of the House of Austria but is against the Queen of Hungary, being swayed by malicious insinutations which will take a long time to efface. My advances towards Lestock have succeeded so well that he has not done me any ill service. He is endeavouring to disengage himself from French management but his attachment to de la Chetardie while he remains here means his conduct cannot change. The Bestuzev brothers always try to promote strict union between Russia and the Maritime Powers and will, I believe, make no scruple of accepting a favour from HM Grand Marshal overjoyed at mention of HM's esteem for him, real proof of which can be produced later. Senate composed of Russian nobility is getting great authority and tries to induce Czarina back to old system, separating her from her friends and allies. Hopefully they will not succeed, and she will choose to join the maritime powers, if she joins any. PS Mardefeld informs me that he has orders from his master to co-operate with me and Botta. Dated Moscow, 8 July 1742.
