Description

Folio 142: Rondeau to Newcastle. Imperial ministers still think that Russia will side with duke of Mecklenburg, who is advised by Count Osterman to stay quiet, so as not to make our court uneasy. Osterman has excuse not to assist Vienna, who he thinks will try forcing duke to return to Danzig, probably vexing the Czarina, and giving her excuses not to send 30,000 men to the Emperor. By doing nothing to help Czarina's brother-in-law he will help regain affection of Russian nobility and ruin German favourites which will produce coldness between the courts of Russia and Vienna. Count Potocki, nephew of primate of Poland, is here, it is summised with secret commission to attract this court to stand by the republic and hinder the election of Prince Royal of Saxony after father's death. Potocki is favoured by Czarina with apartment and servants. Le Fort, the Polish envoy, also uneasy for lack of information of count's mission. Dated Moscow, 13 July 1730.
