Description

Folio 140: Rondeau to Newcastle. Count Wratislaw and other Imperial ministers curious why duke of Mecklenburg returned home despite thundering of numerous Imperial decrees, and why his brother is appointed administrator of his dominions. They fear disquiet between Russia and Vienna. Czarina promises nothing to duke, remembering ill-treatment received by her sister and her despatch to Russia with her daughter. Osterman insinuates his willingness to assist duke if he returns. Westphal believes Russia and France might have encouraged duke's return to vex Emperor. If you send orders, it will irritate the duchess of Mecklenburg against the Emperor, so that although her husband not greatly loved by her she would rather he stay there than come here. Le Dien, the Dutch envoy, arriving soon. Hope he will join with us to weaken Emperor's interests here at court. Dated Moscow, 6 July 1730.
