Description

Folio 139: Jefferyes to Stanhope. About 25 ships taken at Revel ; 3 British, 3 from Lubeck laden with British effects. Sentence of confiscation by court of Admiralty here without knowledge of our merchants and without answer to my memorial on behalf of the ships. This news is hearsay only, not directly communicated from the courts. I expect no answers to anything I have asked. Count Gylenburg is in danger of being questioned about joint transactions with Baron Gortz. Rumours of death sentence passed in Sweden on Stamke. He fears that the Russians might make peace with the Swedes and insist on his extradidition. Count Golovin with 2 secret orders is to open one at Revel and one off Nargen island. The threatened invasion of Great Britain by Spain pleases this Court. I hope the Pretender's ideas against us will be defeated and fear that our need of home shipping will hinder a sufficient squadron being sent to the Baltic where it is much needed to aid our trade and enforce a peace with Sweden. Hearsay among British subjects serving here, that a proclamation is issued ordering our return home. Orders needed for procedure if this proves true or if the Czar refuses permission. Dated StPetersburg, 10 April 1719.
