Description

Folio 137: Jefferyes to Tilson. The duchess of Mecklenburg complained with tears in her eyes to the Czar of the violence used against her husband, because of which she was obliged to seek refuge in this court. In spite of her pleas and the entreaties of the secretary of Count Golovkin, envoy of the Czar at Berlin, who has only come here to obtain the Czar's protection for the duke, it does not seem that it will be given. Brigadier Le Fort is about to depart for Stockholm to congratulate the queen on her accession. General Jaguzinski who must take the same trip, will not leave until the ice opens. It is not known what commissions the latter has been given. Buschin has left for Denmark with dispatches. While crossing the frozen river the Czar was accosted by a peasant who asked why he had left the Capital of Moscow, which would fall into ruin by its isolation. The Czar questioned him about his interest in this and who had sent him, but he did not answer further. Some of the company, noticing him speak and that he always held his left hand under his coat, approached to observe him better, but he stayed. A minute after the Czar left him he was put under guard and examined. It is thought that this unknown man had bad intentions against the Czar. Dated StPetersburg, 10 April 1719. Partly in French.
