Donovan's Petition of Right: John Clarke Donovan, a South African farmer, claimed compensation for breach of contract by the War Department, which had promised payment in return for quartering men, horses and cattle on Donovan's property at the end of the first Boer War in 1881. Counsel's opinion was that the War Office was not in breach of contract and that sufficient payment had been made.
