Description

Map of area now in France, Belgium, Luxembourg: Two maps, in three parts, composed partly of sheets of 'Carte de France ..'., and extended in manuscript, with index map as fourth part: (1) 'Partie or. [orientale] de la frontier entre la Meuse et la Mer pour l'int[elligence] de la p[remière] partie du memoire sur la deffense de cette frontier concernant la deffense entre la Meuse et la Scarpe' (sheets 18, 26, 40); (2, 3) 'Partie occidentale ... pour l'intelligence de la seconde partie du memoire ... entre la Scarpe et la Mer' (sheets 12, 14-19, 26). Titles and frontier lines have been added in manuscript. Reference table on each map to frontier defences and principal positions. Scale: 22 cm to 10,000 toises (1 inch to 1 mile). (1) Dimensions: 117 cm x 133 cm, 78 cm 163 cm and 94 cm x 197 cm. The manuscript additions may have been made between 1790 and 1814: one line may indicate France's boundary of 1790-2, which was altered by the Treaty of Paris, 30 May 1814. (4) Map, apparently an index map, the area now in Belgium being marked out in rectangles numbered I to XXIII. 'Pais Bas Catoliques Connues sous le nom de Flandre. Par N de Fer'. Scale: 5 cm to 'dix heures de chemin' (1 inch to 1 mile). Title and scale in separate decorative cartouches. Observed positions of Calais, Dunkirk, Antwerp and Liège. Compass indicator. Border trimmed. Engraved by Van Loon. 'A Paris chez l'Auteur dans l'Isle du Palais a la Sphere Royale ... 1705'. The date may have been altered from 1703. Engraved. 21 cm x 32 cm.
