Description

Rhymney Railway. 'Map of the Eastern Portion of the South Wales Mineral Field showing its Iron-works and Collieries[,] Railways, Tram Roads and Canals, and the Sea Ports of Cardiff and Newport. 1855': covering parts of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire as far inland as Hirwaun and Abergavenny. Scale: 1 inch to 1 mile. Compass star. Lithographed by Standidge & Co, Old Jewry, London. Manuscript additions, in coloured ink, highlighting some existing railways (light blue) and showing proposed new railway lines (pink and green), including a branch line to Caerphilly and lines Bute Ironworks and Rhymney Ironworks to Walnut Tree Bridge. A sheet affixed to the dorse refers to a lawsuit in the Court of Common Pleas between the Rhymney Railway Company and the Taff Vale Railway Company; it states: 'This is the plan marked 'C' mentioned or referred to in the affidavit of William Richard Page ...' sworn 24 November 1858. A label of the Great Western Railway Company Central Record Office affixed to the dorse numbers this map as 'Plan 77'. The name of Mr John Bramley Moore MP is inscribed on the cover.
