Description

Entry Book of General, Divisional and Brigade Orders.

  • "Light Division 1st Brigade Order Book".
  • This piece comprises two books (/1 and /2), one of which is coverless and consists of 80 pages (/2).

92/1

  • Divisional Orders of the Light Division, issued by Lieutenant General Sir George Brown, (at the front) cover the period 16 May to 7 Jul 1854. They commence with the Division at Scutari, include the move to Varna and conclude with it at Devna. There are also some Divisional Morning Orders, After Orders and Memoranda, as well as District Orders and Memoranda. Most were signed by either W [William] Sullivan, Assistant Adjutant General of the Division. Some extracts from General Orders are included.
  • General Orders (at the back) cover the period 16 May to 2 Jul 1854. There is a gap between 29 May and 28 Jun. After Orders, a Pass Order and some Memoranda are also included.

  • Brigade Orders of the 1st Brigade, issued by Brigadier General Buller, cover the period 15 May to 4 Nov 1854. There is a gap between 28 May and 4 Jun, the period when the brigade was on board ship sailing from Varna to the Crimea. After Orders and Morning Orders are also included. Most were signed by G [George] Vaughan Maxwell and later J [Julius] R [Richard] Glyn, successive Brigade Majors [of the 2nd Brigade].
  • At the back of the book is a list of senior officers and regiments within divisions and also rosters of duty regiment, field officer, captain ands subaltern in the 2nd Brigade. These are incomplete.
