The Central Directorate supported the Secretary of State in achieving the Department of Trade and Industry's aims. It comprised of: the Competitiveness Unit, the Enterprise Unit, the Future Unit and the Department Regulatory Impact Unit. In 1999 the Central Directorate was placed within the newly created Enterprise and Innovation Group and was expanded in 2000 to also take on strategic policy on innovation. Responsibilities covered overall strategy for competitiveness and the knowledge-driven economy in the UK and in Europe, its delivery in the English regions and inward investment for the UK as a whole.
