Description

No 33.

Captured ship: St John of Bilbao (master Gonsalo de la Villa, otherwise Gonzalo de la Villa).

History: a Spanish merchant ship, bound from Bilbao and Santona to Ostend, laden with wool, Castile soap, oranges, lemons and hazelnuts; taken in September 1673 by HMS Dover [Richard Hudson commanding]), and brought into Rye.

Allegation, 1 December 1673, in [Hudson v The St John].

The St John was previously an English merhcant ship, of Dover, owned by one Wallop of Dover, or by other English subjects [unnamed]. These owners or their executors sold the ship to a person or persons living in or near London or some other place in dominions of the King. About 8-12 months ago the ship left London or some other port for Virginia or some other port 'beyond the seas' and was taken by Dutch ships of war, and brought into some part of the Dutch Republic or their allies and condemned. When the ship was taken it was Dutch. Gonzalo de la Villa was not the real master, but another [unnamed], Dutchman was. This person is or was at Rye and hides there or elsewhere so that he would not be discovered as master.

See IND 1/9012 f.42: restored 19 December 1673.
