Prisoner name: Alexander Miller.
Court and Date of Trial: Edinburgh Sheriffs court, October 1847.
Crime: Stealing letters from post office.
Initial sentence: Six months imprisonment.
Outcome: Nil.
Petitions and letters: Petition on behalf of the prisoner by the minister of his church, presented by Mr Gibson Craig MP. He states that the prisoner, a postman, was of dull intellect and was simply overwhelmed by the volume of mail during an election, some of which he stored at home to deliver later, rather than out of dishonesty, and that the punishment was too severe. Sheriff's report obtained. He considers the sentence necessary to protect the public, stating that 78 letters were detained. Indictment attached.
