Court and Date of Trial: Oxford assizes, July 1849.
Crime: Murder.
Initial sentence: Acquitted, on grounds of insanity. Judge orders detention at Her Majesty's pleasure.
Outcome: Removed to county Lunatic asylum 27 July 1849.
Petitions and letters: Visiting Justices at the county gaol enquire what Her Majesty's pleasure is with regard to the prisoner, whom the Jury found not guilty of the murder of his wife Martha by reason of insanity. The response is to remove him to Bethlem, if space is available, as a criminal lunatic, no medical certificate being required.
