Description

Folios 22-23: William Shields, the Sea Fencibles, Harwich. Acknowledges the letter enclosing one in which Captain James Nash claims that he made an error in reporting to the Admiralty. Responds that he would never lie to the Admiralty. Captain Nash has said that the crew of the fishing smack True Heart had no protections when they were impressed in the Firth of Forth. Encloses their protections and the affidavit swearing they had them in their possession when impressed.

Folios 24-25: enclosure with folios 22-23. Affidavit sworn by the Master and five crew of the True Heart fishing smack before Justice John Hopkins, Harwich, 7 December 1803. Swear that they had been issued protections as Sea Fencibles by Captain William Shields and that they had them in their possession when they were impressed by an officer from HMS Escort in the Firth of Forth on 10 November.

Folio 30: enclosure with folios 22-23. Printed protection certificate originally issued by Captain John Nicholl Morris, Harwich, to John Walford of the True Heart on 6 August 1803 and later extended by Captain William Shields.
