Description

Folios 306-307: Jonas Rose, HMS Agamemnon, the Downs. Encloses a letter from Purser Charles Ross asking to be relieved because of his health, suggests Thomas Godfrey, currently Purser of HMS Weymouth but who served with Captain Rose in HMS Jamaica, as a replacement.

Folios 308-309: enclosed with folios 306-307. Letter from Charles Ross, Purser, HMS Agamemnon, the Downs to the Admiralty 26 October 1806. Summarises his long service and that of his family to the Navy, including the battles of Ferrol with Vice Admiral Sir Robert Calder, Trafalgar with Lord Nelson and Santo Domingo with Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Duckworth. Two of his sons were serving with him as Midshipmen during these battles and an older son, Thomas Ross, came home from Malta as an acting Lieutenant in HMS Haarlem when he replaced Lieutenant Henry Evelyn Pitfield Sturt on his promotion to Commander. Mr Ross was denied confirmation of his commission by Lord St Vincent and sent in HMS Morne Fortuneé to the West Indies and later served with Captain Henry Vansittart. Rear Admiral James Richard Dacres appointed him acting Lieutenant of HMS Barracuda, but she was then captured and he may be a prisoner in Cuba. Charles Ross' first warrant as a Purser was in 1777. Asks to be posted to the HMS Saint Domingo, now under construction, or another vessel so that he can recover his health and be near his family in Greenwich. Encloses [not present] recommendations from Captains John Harvey, Sir Edward Berry and Jonas Rose.
