Description

Folios 302-303: Jonas Rose, HMS Agamemnon, the Downs. Reports his arrival with a convoy from the Leeward Islands, encloses [not present] his journal and note of his route. He parted company with Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Inglis Cochrane with HMS Canada, HMS Elephant and HMS Cygnet in Latitude 33º, Longitude 60º on 19 August, leaving HMS Ethalion and HMS Cerf to accompany the convoy. The Cerf parted company in fog on 20 September, presumes she went on to the coast of Ireland and the Bristol Channel with any ships bound that way. The Ethalion parted off the Scilly Isles to return to the West Indies. Encloses [also not present] four copies of his convoy instructions which he took from vessels for the reasons noted on the back of them, calls particular attention to the conduct of the masters of the Leviathan and Alligator, both of whom deliberately parted company knowing that a French squadron was at sea. Encloses a copy of his orders from Admiral Cochrane. Postscript. The Cerf has just arrived in the Downs.

Folios 304-306: enclosed with folios 302-303. Copy of orders from Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, Commander in Chief, Leeward Islands, HMS Northumberland, Old Road, St Kitts, to Captain Jonas Rose, HMS Agamemnon, 14 July 1806. He is ordered to take on board officers and men of the 11th Regiment for passage to England, and then proceed to collect merchant ships at Barbados, St Vincent, Grenada (for the trade from the coast of Guyana), Tobago and Tortola and convoy them to the Downs. To the west of Cape Clear he should detach HMS Cerf to accompany any ships bound for the St George's and Bristol Channels. At Barbados he should also take on board prisoners of war and distribute more of them among the vessels of his convoy. At Grenada he should detach one warship and the Ellen transport to collect the remaining men of the 11th Regiment. He should try to leave Tortola by 31 July or 1 August. Counter-signed by John Tracey on behalf of the Admiral.
