Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England
The Register of Historic Battlefields was established in 1995 as a joint project between English Heritage, The National Army Museum and The Battlefields Trust. Its purpose is to offer protection for battlefields through the planning system and to promote a better understanding of their significance and public enjoyment. In 2011, the Register was incorporated into the National Heritage List for England which is managed by Historic England. Battles must have been of clear historical significance and their sites securely established and be still recognisable today, if the sites are to be added to the Register. Submissions were considered by the Battlefields Panel, which was a non-executive specialist panel that advised the organisation on policy and practice. The Battlefields Panel was disbanded by Historic England in 2015.
