Description

Folios 295-296: Graham Moore, HMS Syren, the Downs. Asks for an order for pay from 1 February 1792 to 30 May 1792 while he acted as Commander of HMS Orestes.

Folios 297-298: enclosed with folios 295-296. Letter dated 6 September 1792 by [WP Ese,?] Navy Office to Philip Stephens. Responds to a letter dated 8 June 1792 enclosing a letter from Captain Moore about a request that he is paid for the time he acted as Commander of HMS Orestes. Advises that he should be allowed half pay or paid the servants pay. Advises that Captain Moore was entered on 31 January 1792 and was Acting Captain until 28 May 1792 but the proper Captain, Sir Harry Burrard, was absent for 6 weeks and Captain Moore may be paid to that time. Also Captain Moore may be allowed Servants pay from 9 March 1792 and half pay from 31 January 1792 to 8 March 1792 in lieu of Servants, in accordance with the Admiralty's order dated 22 May 1746, but as Sir Harry Burrard was absent with leave, if it is the Admiralty's intention to allow him to be paid for the whole time, it would then be proper to allow half pay to Captain Moore for the whole time in lieu of Servants.
