Description

Folios: 204-204v. Somerset. Grant.

First party: William Painell [Paynel], son of Fulk Painell of Bamton [Bampton].

Second party: William Briwer' [Brewer].

Place or subject: All the lands, property, possessions and liberties which Fulk Painell, William's father, gave to William in his manor of Uffeculum [Uffculme]. To hold to William Brewer and his heirs of William Paynel and his heirs by the service of half a knight, which William Brewer and his heirs ought to do to William Paynel and his heirs from Brughwalteri [Bridgwater], Stodlegh and Holecumbe [Holcombe] and the tenements which William Brewer has in Uffeculum [Uffculme] for all service, as freely and quietly as Fulk Paynel, William's father, held them, just as Fulk's charter bears witness. Namely, the vill of Cradoc [Craddock], the vill of Northecot [Northcott], the vill of la Slade, and the vill of Hakepenne [Hackpen], with all appurtenances, and one and a half yardlands in la Hille which Richard Patrich, Ailmar de la Hille and Sampson son of William, held; and the vill of Winbrok [Winbrook], the vill of Aishilt [Ashill], the vill of Sughtwell and three farthinglands in Smithenecot [Smithincott] which William le Gabbere and Richard Peverel held; and the service of Serlo son of William and his heirs from the land of la Hegh and the land of Godelegh and the land of Bamton [Bampton]. William Paynel also granted that William Brewer is not to do any suit in William Paynel's court of Uffeculum [Uffculme], unless at pleas by writs of the king of right, when they happen, and if thieves are to be judged, and this suit is made by one of his freemen from those tenements of Uffculme.
