Description

Captured ship: Fortune (master Paij Knudsen of Husum, Holstein).

History: a Danish-Norwegian merchant ship (fluit, 118 lasts, 10 men, about 40 years old, Norwegian-owned all that time), said to be bound from London to Christiania [now Oslo], but driven into the Vlie, Netherlands, by bad weather; subsequently laden at Enkhuizen, then bound from Enkhuizen to Christiania, laden with tobacco, cake, starch, raisins, capers, olives, sugar bread, lemon juice, paper, cushions, and other goods; taken on 26 April/6 May 1673 about 18 miles off the Vlie by the privateer Norfolk (John Sparrow commanding) under letters of reprisal and brought into Leith, Scotland. Said to be sailing with Holstein passes, under the Holstein flag.

Documents:- examinations; 13 docs and a wrapper on a thong, with 2 sets of numbering. 1st set on front: 9-21. 2nd set: CM 14-27 on back. 1-8/CM 1-13 and 26 are missing. Wrapper (CM 27) is not numbered in the 1st set. Numbering here follows the first HCA scheme on the front: SP 9-21, wrapper SP 22

  • [CP 1]: 4 examinations taken at Leith, 8 May 1673;

Ships Papers, numbered SP 9-22:-

  • [SP 1-SP 8: probably restored to the ship owners];
  • SP 9: Dutch customs pass, 4 May 1673;
  • SP 10-SP 20: 10 letters and notes for Christiania;
  • SP 21: invoice for tobacco, addressed to the master in port at Enkhuizen;
  • SP 22: wrapper.

Extra information:-

  • Owners Andras Peterson and Jurgan Peterson, brothers, of Christiania;
  • IND 1/9012, f.26v: ship restored 8 August 1673, probably with some of the ship's papers; lading condemned 12 August 1673;
  • HCA 30/882, p. 61: 26 papers were received 6 June 1673.
