Description

Captured ship: Fortune [of Nantes] (prize master Jean La Plaunte of Bayonne)

History: a French merchant ship (8 tons, unarmed, 6 French prize crew), bound from [Nantes], laden with brandy, tobacco and French wines; taken by a Dutch privateer in early 1673; retaken on 24 January/3 February 1672/1673 about 9 leagues off Audierne by the French frigate [and naval warship] Bay Tree or Laurel of Brest [that is, the naval ship Laurier] (De Noau, otherwise De Noua, De Nova, commanding), and sent in for Brest, but forced by contrary winds and the loss of her foresail into Plymouth about 14/24 February 1672/1673, and there seized about 25 February/7 March 1672/1673.

Extra information:-

  • Restored 26 May 1673: see IND 1/9012, f.26. When the ship was seized, the prize master had no commission or ships papers, and there were none of the Dutch privateer crew aboard that could be examined, nor any of the original French papers.
